My husband and I first met when I was 16 and going into my junior year of high school and he was 18 and had just graduated. We were going to the same church, but never really spoke to each other until that summer when we went on a mission trip with our youth group to San Francisco, CA. We were doing a Vacation Bible School with sports, crafts, and dance for the kids on Treasure Island. One day after doing the camp, we ended up in the same car sitting next to each other and started talking. Things quickly took off from there because we kept talking the whole trip and we had a day at Six Flags where we went on a bunch of rides together. On the road trip back home, we sat next to each other and traded phone numbers. When I got home, I got a text from him and he was asking me on a date. Not long after that we met each others families and were spending every minute together we could.

A couple months later, it was my 17th birthday. Sean took me to Seattle for the day and we had so much fun eating, shopping, and sight seeing. We went up the Space Needle and when we walked outside to see the view, Sean got down on one knee and proposed. It’s the craziest thing to think back on and look at how young we were. I’ll never forget leaving the Space Needle and finding out we had a parking ticket for not backing into the space.

We were engaged for the next two and a half years. During that time, I finished high school and one year of college and Sean graduated with his teaching degree. We decided to get married that summer and have a backyard wedding. It was absolutely perfect. It was a beautiful day, we had only our family (though we were missing a few family members that live far away) and my closest friend. We didn’t want there to be any unnecessary stress that day. My mom made us a cheesecake and we had a bbq right after the ceremony. We ate and talked with our family we don’t see too often and then got in the car and drove to Disneyland.

Our wedding day

Our honeymoon at Disneyland. I got Sean into pin trading and we had a blast ( and now a huge pin collection )

We are now coming up on our fifth wedding anniversary which feels crazy that it’s been five years already. We have moved 6 times, Sean’s had the same job at the same school, I’ve had two jobs and now stay at home, I started selling clothing to help with staying at home, and we have two beautiful boys. These past four, almost five, years have been amazing and are filled with so many memories. I can’t wait to see where the next five years take us.

  1. Wow, and I thought I got married quick. 🙂 This is going to be such a neat story for you kids. Your backyard small wedding sounds like something I wish we would have done. And then drive to Disney…….yes please. Congrats on your journey and good luck to the rest of it. 🙂

    1. haha 🙂 yes, it will be a great story to tell them, but at the same time I’ll be hoping they don’t get engaged that young. Thank you! 🙂

  2. What a beautiful, romantic story! I like how you both decided to keep things simple on your wedding day “to avoid stress.” It seems like your story was orchestrated by God Himself. You both happened to be on the same mission trip and then the same car… God’s richest blessings to you both and the little ones He has blessed you with. Wishing you both many more five years of celebration.

    1. Thank you so much 🙂 It sure does seem that way. It’s always comforting to know God has a plan for you and then to see what happens down the road.

  3. Happy 5th anniversary! I’m coming up on my 33rd wedding anniversary and I can tell you that the time does fly by! Enjoy every minute of it, especially with your boys, you will blink one day and they will be all grown up. Thanks for sharing your story.

    1. Thank you! Happy anniversary to you too! That’s amazing! Yes, in a way I feel like I’ve known him for a very long time, but when I think about how it’s been five years of marriage already it seems crazy!
